چکیده

We describe sharp thermal limits to the ocean distribution of steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) which restrict the distribution of steelhead to only a small fraction of the area of the North Pacific otherwise available for grazing. Maximum likelihood estimates indicate that (1) steelhead exhibit a strong response to temperature in all regions of the North Pacific ocean and in all seasons ofthe year; (2) both upper and lower thermal thresholds exist; (3) although the thermal limits have been largely stable over the last 40 years, the temperature defining the southern edge of the steelhead distribution exhibits statistically significant fine-scale differences between regions «2°C) and between decades «0.5°C). As a result of this strong thermal control, steelhead are distributed in a narrow north-south band stretching across much of the width of the Pacific. Projections of the degree of ocean warming resulting from greenhouse gas induced climate change suggest that the ocean distribution of steelhead may shift far enough north under a 2xC02 climate that large areas of currently occupied ocean habitat could lie outside the range of these thermal limits by the middle of the next century.

Cold tolerance performance of westslope cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and its potential role in influencing interspecific hybridization

Hybridization between rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792)) and westslope cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi (Girard, 1856)) occurs commonly when rainbow trout are introduced into the range of westslope cutthroat trout. Typically, hybridization ismost common inwarmer, lower elevation habitats, butmuch less common in colder, higher elevation habitats. We assessed the tole...

Effect of thermal stress on some hematological parameters of diploid and triploid Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Temperature fluctuation is one of the most common stressors during fish transportation and aquaculture condition. Triploid rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) get more attention because of its sterility. In this study, 24 rainbow trout belong to diploid and triploid group, average weight 13±0.23 g were subjected to temperature change from 13 to 20 ºC, and kept under tension for 10 min. Before a...

Distribution and Molecular identification of some causative agents of streptococcosis isolated from farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum) in Iran

Over the past few years, the syndrome of streptococcosis has been associated with outbreaks in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum) and caused significant economic losses in the aquaculture industry in Iran. The main purpose of this work was molecular identification of some causative agents of streptococcosis in rainbow trout. A total of 520 samples were collected from the head kidney o...

Nociception in fish: stimulus-response properties of receptors on the head of trout Oncorhynchus mykiss.

This study examined stimulus-response properties of somatosensory receptors on the head of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, using extracellular recording from single cells in the trigeminal ganglion. Of 121 receptors recorded from 39 fish, 17 were polymodal nociceptors, 22 were mechanothermal nociceptors, 18 were mechanochemical receptors, 33 were fast adapting mechanical receptors and 31 we...
